The Maasai Mara National Reserve is where the migration's river crossings happen from roughly July to October, and it is where the vehicles gather to watch. The private conservancies that border it — Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Mara North, Ol Kinyei and others — share the same ecosystem, cap vehicle numbers, allow night drives and walking, and are where a first safari usually belongs if the budget allows.
The trade: a conservancy camp costs more per night and you drive into the reserve for the crossings themselves. In return you get predator sightings with two vehicles instead of twenty, and a landscape that still feels like the Mara people imagine.

Wildlife in Maasai Mara & Conservancies
- Wildebeest and zebra migration
- Herds enter from the Serengeti around July; Mara River crossings are unscheduled and depend on rainfall.
- Lion
- The Mara's prides are among the most studied and most easily seen in Africa; conservancies offer them without the crowd.
- Cheetah
- Open plains make the Mara one of the most reliable places to watch a hunt.
- Leopard
- Riverine forest along the Mara and Talek rivers; night drives in the conservancies improve the odds.
Three ways to base yourself.
Reserve
Inside the national reserve: closest to the crossings, most vehicles, widest price range.
Conservancy
Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Mara North: capped vehicles, night drives, walking, higher nightly rates that fund the land.
Private house
Exclusive-use villas on conservancy land for families and groups; your own vehicle and guide throughout.
Where you sleep decides what you wake to.
Frequently asked questions
Reserve or conservancy?
Conservancy, for most travelers who can afford the difference. You still drive into the reserve for the crossings, and the rest of your safari is quieter, closer, and allows night drives and walking that the reserve does not.
When exactly do the crossings happen?
The herds are usually in the Mara from July to October, but a crossing is not an event on a schedule; it depends on rain, river level and the herds' mood. Anyone guaranteeing a crossing on a date is selling, not advising.
Is the Mara good outside migration season?
Yes. January and February are dry, warm and much quieter, with excellent resident predators. The conservancies are strong year-round; the reserve is thinnest in April and May.
