Rwanda and Uganda are the mountain gorilla countries, and the encounter is unlike anything else in African travel: an hour on foot with a habituated family in the montane forest of the Virungas or Bwindi. Rwanda is the streamlined, premium route; Uganda is the broader adventure with chimpanzees and savanna parks. Most travelers pair either with a Kenya or Tanzania safari, and both belong in the conversation about what a first trip to Africa should include.
How Rwanda & Uganda compares on price and season: costs and timing across all eight countries.
Choose Rwanda & Uganda if…
- The gorilla encounter itself is the reason for the trip
- You are reasonably fit and comfortable with steep, muddy forest walking
- You are pairing this with a savanna safari and want genuine contrast
- You want to see chimpanzees as well (Uganda especially)
Reconsider if…
- Mobility is limited; treks range from one to six hours over rough terrain
- The permit price alone is a deal-breaker (Rwanda especially)
- You want a beach component; both countries are landlocked
Where to focus
Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)
The Virunga volcanoes two hours from Kigali. Twelve habituated families, superb lodges, and the most streamlined gorilla experience available. Also golden monkeys and the Dian Fossey story.

Ancient montane forest with more gorilla families than Rwanda and a wilder, longer-trek feel. Four sectors; choose by lodge and fitness.

- Tree-Climbing Lion
- The Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth is famous for lions resting in fig trees.
- Shoebill
- A prehistoric-looking stork sought by birders in Uganda’s papyrus swamps.

How much do gorilla permits cost?
Rwanda’s permits are among the highest-priced wildlife permits in the world, and Uganda’s are materially lower; both change over time and are set by the respective wildlife authorities. We quote the current figure at planning time and never guess.
How fit do I need to be?
Treks range from an hour to six or more over steep, muddy, high-altitude terrain. Reasonable fitness is enough for most; porters are available and worth hiring. Tell us honestly and we will match you to the right group and sector.
Rwanda or Uganda?
Rwanda for polish, short transfers and premium lodges at a premium price. Uganda for more forest, chimpanzees, savanna parks and lower cost. Both deliver the gorilla hour equally; the difference is everything around it.
Can this be combined with a safari?
It should be. Kigali and Entebbe connect easily to Nairobi and Kilimanjaro. Gorillas plus the Mara or Serengeti is the most complete East Africa itinerary there is.
