Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is two hours from Kigali with premium lodges and permits priced to match. Uganda’s Bwindi offers more forest and more habituated families at lower permit cost, plus Kibale for some of the most reliable chimpanzee tracking in Africa. The gorilla hour is the same in both.
It pairs with a savanna safari precisely because it is nothing like one: forest and apes, then plains and cats. Kigali and Entebbe connect easily to Nairobi and Kilimanjaro.
This is for you if…
- Anyone reasonably fit who wants the encounter
- Travelers pairing forest with a Kenya or Tanzania safari
- Chimpanzee and birding enthusiasts (Uganda)
Reconsider if…
- Children under 15 (a firm minimum in both countries)
- Limited mobility — treks can be steep and long
How it actually works.
The trek
One to six hours through steep, muddy forest, then one hour with the family. Porters are available and worth hiring.
The permit
Book six to twelve months out for dry-season dates. One family per group per day; numbers are capped by design.
The pairing
Gorillas plus the Mara or Serengeti is the most complete East Africa itinerary there is.

Frequently asked questions
Rwanda or Uganda for gorillas?
Rwanda for polish, short transfers and premium lodges at a premium price. Uganda for more forest, chimpanzees nearby and lower permit costs. The hour with the gorillas is the same.
How fit do I need to be?
Treks range from an hour to six or more over rough terrain. Reasonable fitness is enough for most; tell us honestly and we request an appropriate family.
