South Africa is the easiest answer: malaria-free reserves like Madikwe and the Eastern Cape, dedicated family lodges, short transfers and Cape Town to combine. Kenya’s conservancies are flexible and offer family tents with a private vehicle. Botswana is the most restrictive, with many camps setting minimum ages of six to twelve; Zambia’s walking camps often higher.
The pace matters more than the destination. A private vehicle means you leave when the children are done, not when the vehicle is. Two camps rather than four. Shorter drives, a pool, and guides who are good with children — ask specifically.
This is for you if…
- Families with children over about six

Reconsider if…
- Very long fly-in circuits with under-sixes
- Walking safaris with young children
