The crater floor is around 260 square kilometres of grassland, swamp and forest with resident lion, elephant bulls, black rhino, and huge herds that do not migrate. Game density is extraordinary. So is vehicle density from mid-morning.
The way to do it: stay on the rim or in the highlands, descend at the gate opening, and be off the floor by lunch. Combine with the Serengeti next door and Tarangire on the way.

- Black rhino
- One of the more reliable places in East Africa to see one.

- Elephant bulls
- Some of the largest tuskers left in Tanzania in the Lerai forest.
- Flamingo
- On Lake Magadi when water levels allow.
Three ways to base yourself.
Crater rim
The view and the earliest descent; cold nights at altitude.
Ngorongoro highlands
Quieter lodges among the coffee farms and forest, thirty to sixty minutes from the gate.
Karatu
Wider price range in the town below the rim; longer morning drive.
Where you sleep decides what you wake to.
Frequently asked questions
How many nights at Ngorongoro?
One or two. One full crater descent is enough for most travelers; a second night buys a highland walk or a Maasai village visit.
How do I avoid the crowds on the floor?
Be at the descent gate at opening, do the floor early, and leave by early afternoon. Green-season months are noticeably quieter.
Is the crater worth the extra fees?
For a first Tanzania safari, yes: nowhere else concentrates this much game, including rhino, in a single morning. Repeat travelers sometimes skip it for more Serengeti time.
