The Serengeti is not one place but a circuit the migration walks each year: calving on the southern plains around January to March, the western corridor in May and June, the northern Mara River crossings from July to October, and the drift back south with the short rains. A good Serengeti safari puts you in the right sector for your dates, which is a different camp in February than in August.
Mobile camps that move with the herds are the purest way to do it. Permanent lodges in the central Seronera area are strong year-round for resident predators and are where the vehicles concentrate.

Wildlife in Serengeti National Park
- The migration
- Around 1.5 million wildebeest with zebra and gazelle; calving in the south, crossings in the north.
- Big cats
- Seronera's kopjes are classic lion country; cheetah on the open plains; leopard along the rivers.
- Predator action at calving
- January to March in the south delivers the year's most concentrated hunting.
Three ways to base yourself.
Mobile camp
Moves with the herds; the most immersive and the best-positioned option for your month.
Central lodge
Seronera: year-round resident game, easiest logistics, busiest.
Northern private camp
Kogatende and Lamai for crossings with fewer vehicles than the Mara side.
Where you sleep decides what you wake to.
Frequently asked questions
Serengeti or Masai Mara for the crossings?
Same river, two sides. The Serengeti's northern sector is larger and less crowded; the Mara is more compact and easier to reach. If crowds matter, the Serengeti side; if a short trip from Nairobi matters, the Mara.
Is a mobile camp comfortable?
Very. Modern mobile camps have proper beds, en-suite bucket showers with hot water, and excellent food. What you give up is a swimming pool; what you gain is being where the herds are.
Can I do the Serengeti in five nights?
Yes, if you pick one sector for your month and fly in and out. Trying to see the whole park in five nights means spending them in a vehicle.
